When ChatGPT Becomes the Top Referral Channel: What Tally’s Growth Reveals About How People Discover Brands

💡

Key takeaways

  • In June 2025, Tally announced that ChatGPT had become its top referral source.

  • Its annual recurring revenue grew from $2 million to $3 million in about four months.

  • The company did not establish that AI traffic was responsible for all of its revenue growth.

An international example — what changed?

In a post on its official blog, form-building service Tally described AI search as an emerging customer acquisition channel, alongside word of mouth and organic search.

The company said it had tracked more than 2,000 new sign-ups from AI tools in recent months. In its sign-up survey, even more users said AI was how they discovered Tally.

Tally said it had spent years sharing its experiences publicly, answering questions in communities, and talking with users. The company suggested that these efforts may also have helped people discover it through AI search.

The same post announced $3 million in annual recurring revenue, but also described other growth factors, including expanded paid features. ARR is a metric that differs from the total revenue actually confirmed over a year.

Our perspective — what does this mean for hospitals?

The following is our interpretation of how a service company’s experience might apply to hospitals.

Hospitals should consider how AI may become part of the way patients find them.

  1. Explain what makes the hospital distinct. Share information patients need to understand the hospital, such as its specialties, clinicians’ areas of expertise, and care processes.

  2. Keep core information consistent across channels. Check that the hospital’s name, location, contact details, and care information match across its website and external listings.

  3. Build a library of answers to real questions. Regularly publish useful information for patients and update it when details change.

Tally’s results do not mean hospitals will see the same outcomes. They do, however, offer a reason to monitor emerging traffic sources and learn how patients discover a hospital.

What hospitals can review now

  • Does the website clearly explain the hospital’s care specialties?

  • Is official information consistent with external listings?

  • Are there public resources that answer common questions?

  • Are you finding out whether patients discovered the hospital through AI?
